I was really shocked when I read the bad reviews of this phone. I have had my set for several months and have NEVER experienced any of the problems mentioned in other reviews. I do have to say that the way I have my phones arranged, the main one in the basement and the extra phone (the one that does not need to be plugged into a phone jack) in my bedroom, they happen to be right on top of each other, albeit on separate flooors- so maybe that has something to do with why my recpetion is so great. But again, I have never had any problems and think this is a great phone. I love the simple, sleek design and do not think it feels or looks cheap.

I purchased this system for my 2850 sq ft home. The phones are nice and user friendly but the singles are very weak and do not cover the entie house. They drop call or your getting a scratchy sound but once you move closer to the base it is some better. I have put the base in a central portion of my house but it still gives out a poor single.

Just purchased this phone from Costco for 99.99, less than anywhere else available. The features of this phone are great. Being able to retrieve messages from any of the 4 handsets is a major plus. The intercom feature from handset to handset also ranks high on the feature list. I have not had the opportunity to try the enhanced Caller ID feature yet where you can send people to voice mail, dump the call, or have it announce that you will not take this call... but it does sound cool.

Ergonomically the phone is easy to hold against the ear with your shoulder due to the size. It's not thin where it will make you crank your head way over, and it's not too thick either.

I was worried about using it so close to my wireless network setup in the office. But have not had a single problem even though they reside in the same 2.4 GHZ band.

Everything about this phone screams comfort to use. But there are some drawbacks that I have found.

First, the buttons need to be pressed down fully to be used. While this is not like my last phone, you may find it not so easy for the elderly.

The End button is placed in a weird place, that takes some time to get used to. They have such a large Talk button, that I feel it should also have been used to end a call, but then again, where would you put the flash button? (The talk button does both features).

It will take some time to get used to all the features that are available... since they are all accessed through the menu/clear and select buttons even while on a call... which is how you dump calls that are coming through to voice mail.. a cool feature.

Overall I would rate it a high 4, not a 5 since nothing is perfect. But for the price of getting all these phones in the house with only having to plug in one for the jack, this is a great buy. The feature list is bigger than what they advertise, so be prepaired, but whats great is that you won't get lost in setting this up... or using them, Menu items are done very well.

Worth the money... in my opinion YES

I buy this phone when we were moving to a new house, so I can use extra handset upstaires. I did not try it untill after a month, when I moved to new place I tried it. But the second handset doesn't work. It rings but when you pick-up the phone you will just here horrible loud sounds. I contect the staples, but it was more then a month they said they can't do anything about that. So I contected uniden's customer service. They had a horrible customer survice. When I buy this phone I think this was a good deal, but now I tossed it just in my basement. And may be next time when I clean my basement it's going to be in trash. his phone eeven doesn't deserve 1 star,but I can't give it less then one star. If you are planning to buy phone, just spend little more money and go for panasonic. I am using one for 4 years now, and I buy another one with extra handsets from panasonic, and it's working great.

Have had this phone for several years, and have loved the phone. They have withstood being smashed in the lazyboy (which gouged the exterior), thrown across the room, and other roughhousing and still work great. The range is about 200 feet. The problem I have with it is replacement batteries are hard to find, if not impossible. They have stayed charged for 2 days straight and then need to recharge. Comfortable on the face, and clear sound. Like the intercom, etc.

I have a diffeent ring for each family member. All their phone number ring the same tone so I know who it is by the ring; don't even need to look. The only thing I'd like to be able to do is turn off the flashing message notification on the handset but even that is minor- I just need to pick up my messages. And, yes, there is a redial feature.

This phone has several major flaws. First, there is no redial, hard to believe, but true. Second, the orange color on the LCD is terrible. This color makes it hard to see the graphics, which are themselves annoying. Third, the LCD quality is very poor. Pictures,Words and numbers are grainy and appear very low tech, dated and obsolete looking. Lastly, the direct link/walkie talkie mode is a joke. It only works if the handsets are not in the charger and if you don't try to use the phone as a phone and if no calls come in. I would not buy this phone again. Between no redial and the terrible LCD orange color and LCD quality I'd have to advise you to keep looking. I have started looking again, and I'm stuck with 4 of these things!

"I HATE this phone and answering machine" 2008-09-03

This combination answering machine/telephone was a gift. I will never have another Uniden after my experience with this one. I am very tech saavy, and I still can't even figure out how to change the greeting without the user's guide (which, of course, I can't find). The following are other features that makes one wonder if the designer of this phone ever actually used it:

You can only talk on one receiver at a time. If two people want to talk at the same time on different handsets, they are out of luck.

The sound on the answering machine sounds like you are in a tin

box.

The feature that allows you to check messages remotely has never worked.

If all messages aren't timely deleted, the answering machine becomes full after 10-12 messages, and it reverts to a rude-sounding automatic greeting that does not allow callers to leave a message.

Base speaker is lousy. You can hear the other person okay, but they can't hear you.

The only thing I do like is that I can check messages on the handsets.

We have several cordless phones, but this is overall the best. I especially like how clear the caller's voice comes in and the ability to amplify or lower both the loudness of the incoming voice and your own. Also, another helpful feature for me is the ability to scan through your preset numbers to make sure you are making the right choice before you even turn on the phone. The only thing I miss is having a speakerphone with it. I don't use one often, but with five young grandchildren, a speakerphone gives both grandparents a chance to hear them before their attention span runs out!

First, the (very) good news: the sound quality rocks! I was frankly surprised how consistently clean and clear the sound is, even when I go one floor down from my apartment and across the street!
When I purchased this phone from Costco I also got a free headset; if you buy the phone here at Amazon.com, I'd recommend also getting a headset because it's VERY convenient and -- once again -- the sound quality is excellent (for both parties). It's wonderfully liberating being able to be productive with both hands AND no hunched shoulder while being on hold :)
And now for the less-than-good news:
- Many settings have limited options. For instance, you can have the answering machine #-of-rings-then-pick-up set to 2, 4, 6, or 'toll-saver'. Why not 3 or 5? Who knows? Similarly, many other settings (such as volume) have very few settings).
- Here's a big thumbs-down: You cannot turn off the ringer on the handset! On my last phone, you could quickly flick a switch on the side of the phone, which was heavenly so I could take naps undisturbed by telemarketers!
- The automated voice (for time/date-stamp, etc.) sounds like he's on drugs... very very slow. Ack!
- Just 10 slots for phone memory? Come on, with such cheap memory costs nowadays, it'd have cost them an extra .0001 cents per unit to expand the capacity to 20 or even 50 numbers. Worse yet, you can't store strings of more than 20 numbers in a slot, so my calling card takes up TWO slots just by itself :-(
With all these annoyances, it's only the phone's fine clarity and general comfortable feel (gripwise, etc.) that saves it from being dropped to 3 stars. However, I'd sure rather have a cordless that sounds great than one with lots of whiz-bang features :)

I have had this phone for at least 4 years now. It is still on its original battery and has been working fine all this time. I often step outside when I use the phone, and the reception is just as good as if I was next to the base. All the features are easy to use. For the cheapest phone in the store, it worked out just great!

However, I might need to replace the battery soon, and it looks like it would cost almost as much as getting a new phone.

This phone works well and is, in every way but one, what I needed. My one problem is that I couldn't get proper reception in my kitchen. I switched it with one in my bedroom and that allows it to function well. Unfortunately, this leaves me with a phone in my kitchen without an answering machine; and I have to go to a different floor for my messages.

Shame on Uniden for making this piece of junk. I bought it October 4th and the unit died completely on Christmas eve... under 3 months later. While I haven't tried contacting Uniden (I'm writing this on Christmas day), it's really not worth the hassle of having it fixed. It was only $25, but for even that much it shoud have lasted longer than 2.5 months. I've loved Uniden in the past, but those have always been their more expensive models which all have great sound quality and have lasted years. This model was purchased merely because I am living away from home for several months and decided my cell phone just wasn't cutting it so I decided to get a home line and an inexpensive phone with an answering machine. Guess I should have just spent another $25 to get something that would actually last. :\

Since it only cost around 25 dollars, I just went and purchased a different phone. It is pretty bad that it did not even last a year!!! I purchased this phone as a primary answering machine in my home based on my two previous Unidens that I loved and have come to regret it. It's a flimsy machine with poor audio quality. What drives me nuts is the volume - I can barely hear others, but when I speak I feel like my own voice is blasting my eardrum. If I decrease the volume I have a hard time hearing the person on the other end - increase it and I have to hold the phone away from my head when I speak. Nowhere near the quality of the other (more expensive) Unidens. It was so cheap I didn't get around to returning it to Amazon. Oh well, lesson learned. Now I'm going to buy a Panasonic.

Here's a great deal for under fifty bucks. These phones feel great on your ear, and sound exactly like corded phones. Their small size lets them fit in nicely anywhere and the base unit mounts easily to the wall. There's a volume control that lets you turn the things up to 11, really loud if you want it.

Not sure why the other reviewer on this list mentioned static -- I didn't notice that at all, and we have lots of wireless devices around here including another cordless phone and two WiFi computers.

There are good reasons why Consumer Reports rated this two-phone set highly, and recommended it. It's a super value for the money. We're buying another set today, instead of getting one of those 5.8 gigahertz models that doesn't even sound as good as this. We had a choice of getting one of those 5.8 GHz phones with three extra handsets for nearly $400, or two of these dual-phone sets for under $100. Easy choice for us.

I have an older model Uniden phone that looks very much like the 7926 I just bought for a 2nd home office phone. I immediately noticed that the sound quality in the 7926 earphone (and with a hands-free headset plugged in) was very much inferior to the older unit. The 7926 has a distinct "hiss" around each word spoken--kind of a "white noise" in the background that starts and stops with each word spoken or heard. For me, this hiss gets more irritating as the volume increases. Also the range to the base is far less than the older model. I just checked the model numbers and features and found that the older phone is a Uniden exs9660 and has digital spread spectrum (900 Mhz). The new phone is of course, the exi7926, which does not have spread spectrum, and is, I assume, analog. Wow, what a difference. No "word-hiss" at all in the older phone--I'm assuming this is due to the DSS technology--and much greater range. If this is because of the DSS, I gotta return the 7926 and get something with DSS. More expensive, but worth it for me. Hope this helps someone else who is shopping (I don't think the exs9660 is still available, but am checking).

Don't buy this phone if you have teenagers using line 2!

This phone has a ringer on the base unit and one in the hand set. You can only turn off ringer on base unit. Handset toggles from low to high volume, presumably so you can always locate the handset. Some clever programming by Uniden could have fixed that feature. Unacceptable in 2001...

I had ordered one for my husband a year ago because it had all the features he wanted. When I was in need of a new phone I read the reviews which were no longer favorable, but didn't have a problem with the phone set up and hanging up on people or the static when you are in close range of the base. Since I have ordered a second one for my home office - I have noticed static problems when I get to far from the base - but I know it's not a 900mhz phone and I didn't pay for that. The phone works great in my office and that's where I leave it - but I can walk around the upstairs of my home with it - no problems.

Amazingly poor phone. Although Uniden can be good at times, this one is virtually worthless:

1) The keys on the handset began to wear out after just 3 weeks of use. By 4 months, only 2 of 12 keys were legible. (My nails are quite short.)

2) It's very hard to turn the ringer on and off: You literally have to press 6 buttons to get the ringer tone to turn on or off.

3) Callers who want to bypass the recorded announcement (outgoing message) by hitting pound can only get it to bypass after pressing pound about 4 times (it works inconsistently)

4) If you want to monitor your incoming calls, you have to listen to your outgoing message each time a call comes in (can't turn it off).

5) This is obviously a phone prepared for a European market that was dropped onto the American market. Date stamp is not in American format.

6) Support staff at Uniden were rude, to put in mildly, and obviously not interested in being helpful to customers.

Right off, I notice several VERY annoying things. The interface is very

difficult to work with. The silly beeps and blurps get old quickly.

Even though the handset is squared up, it is difficult to hold

because of the small size, which isn't apparent in the photos. There is

no external headset jack and it is not wall-mountable, but I knew this

when I purchased. It is expandable however extra handsets are expensive.

The outgoing greeting MUST be recorded by you; it has no anonymous

'default' greeting that most others have, and that I prefer. There are

numerous other quirks that were annoying as well, but I won't list them

here.

After charging and fiddling with this thing for over an hour I

could not get the date/time to set. The answering machine refused to

function properly because of this, which made the whole thing unusable.

I finally gave up and returned this phone. I'm sure that defective units

are the exception, but even before I found out that the date would not

set properly, I was disappointed. This phone felt cheap, light and was

not comfortable or intiuitive to use at all. The beeps/braps/blurps were

extremely annoying, and you will probably find this to be reason enough

to return yours if you buy.

This phone system generally works quite well and is nice because it can be expanded. The big drawback is that the phone is not smart enough to put a "1" in front of long distance calls when you try to call back a number on caller ID. As a result, you can't just look through your caller ID and call back anyone on long distance. You have to write down the number and redial it manually. That is pretty idiotic for a phone in this day and age.

"Great phone - great service" 2008-01-09

I got two 2-phone systems when I signed up with Sunrocket a couple of years ago. I've been very happy with these free phones. (Sunrocket is another story, however.)

Pros

1) These phones work great. I have tons of electronic stuff in my home and I've NEVER had any electronic noise or interference on these. I walk all over my house with no reception problems while talking.

2) They hold up great. I treat them horribly. They still look new.

3) They're easy to program numbers and change setup features.

4) Great customer support. I received two 'base' units and two satellite units and couldn't figure out how to make one of the base units into a satellite unit. I called their customer support number on a Saturday morning and they not only solved the puzzle quickly but treated me like an old friend.

Cons

1) While the phone is ergonomically very pleasing, the keys are a little small for my stubby fingers. I find that I use my fingernails to press the keys. Not a big deal, but the phone is kind of small.

2) I wish there was a little more memory for storing numbers. I have about 15 numbers in my phone and that just about maxes out the memory. Tip: if you have trouble storing more numbers, empty the caller ID bucket to temporarily add more room for numbers. Somehow, this works.

I would have rated this a 4 until I realized that all three handsets have a flaw. None of the battery level indicators work. That is, they let you know when it's full after first charge but do not lower as the battery power goes down. Also, there is no indication at all prior to the phone going dead during a call. This is a problem on all three of my handsets so it's an issue with all of them or at least a batch. This is very disappointing to me. I'm debating on sending these back but that's such a hassle.. The only way to see the battery level is to unplug the battery and plug it back in. It will then give you and accurate battery level at that instant in time. If you buy these, plan on keeping the handsets on the base to make sure you are always at a good charge before making or taking a call.

I liked this phone alot.The only thing about it that I dislike is that you cannot program in a name so it comes up on caller id when it says cell phone or something like that.You can have a bunch of calls that have a number and says incoming call but you can not program a name to that number so it says the name instead.Other than that it has good sound you can store alot of numbers in the previous calls 100 I think and the price is right.....

The Uniden phone that I actually received was a Uniden DCT 746 - an upgrade from what I ordered. It was compatible with the Uniden DCT 646 phones that I already were using in my home, a good thing. I don't think the 646 is being made any more, but at least I was able to add another line because of the upgrade compatibility. It is easy to use, easy to add to our existing system. The Uniden DCT phones seem to be durable, long battery life, good all-around equipment.

This phone is awful! I had been previously using a Siemens cordless, which was exceptionally good for 4 years until my wife dropped it in the toilet one last time (it survived other such incedents). I was looking for a phone with speaker on the handset and found this one. I don't know much about the power of the phone, but I do know that this phone produces a terrible signal most of the time. Our relatives are always complaining that the signal is broken and choppy. When I call to speak to my wife I can barely make out what she's saying. It isn't like that all the time, but probably 80% of the time. I do run wireless internet from a router and don't know if that has anything to do with it. The phone is small and light, which is good. I need this phone for basic needs and it doesn't fulfill me what-so-ever. I will not buy a Uniden again.

This is my second Uniden Phone that I REALLY LOVE. It is only 5" x 2", which makes it easy to dial with one hand. It has great clarity, with or without head phones.

It was very easy to program. This phone holds 100 phone numbers and you can enter them in one phone and copy it to the other one. That is a great feature!

You can get your messages even when you are away form home. This phone also has a speaker box on it, so you can put either phone on speaker an set it down and everyone in the room can hear and talk to the person on the other end.

The speaker phone on the base also works great. When family or friends call from out of town, my husband and I both visit with them and with great clarity!

I love the orange color of the backlighting, it makes it very easy to read. It is also easy to see when you have messages waiting for you from the base. When you want to hear your messages from one of the handsets, you push the select button and your messages will play out loud through the speaker box on the back of the handset. It is a nice feature, not having to go to the base to hear your messages.

They quit making the model that I was looking for and I did alot of research before I bought this. I am very happy with this little phone that is packed with nothing but great features! If you are looking for a expandable, small phone with great reception, then you will not be disappointed with this one!

There are some other nice features that are not mentioned elsewhere:

You can easily add a caller-ID entry into the phone book. This makes it easy to populate your phone-book over time as friends call.

You can retrieve messages and perform other answering machine functions from the handsets.

The handsets do not start ringing until the second ring of the call. This helps me a lot because I have a computer that hnags up on telelmarketers but can only do so after the caller-ID string shows up. It only appears during the first ring. With this system, I don't even have to hear a ring for rejected calls.

The baby monitor function is clear as a bell. Every baby monitor I have owned is full of static pops and cracks.

My friend presented me with this phone and ever since then, it has become a part or my family. It was a welcome break for me from the Panasonic model which had the echo issues. It was like I was recording my voice and listening to it. The EXI 5160 is certainly the best gift I could have got then. I was so impressed, that I bought a pair of cordless models for my parents to use in their home. They are happy as well.

My phone is a 5.8 GHz model, and is pretty clear over moderately longer distances from my apartment as well. I could be talking to someone over the phone, while I take the elevator to the lobby of my apartment. The model which my parents use is also very impressive. We could take one of the hand-sets to my neighbors house, and still be able to call the other hand-set.

I use a ear-phone connected to the hand-set and thanks to the attachment provided, I can hang the hand-set to my buckle, or belt and walk around talking to someone while I vacuum the floor, or do the laundry. The volume controls are also pretty effective. Battery life is impressive as well. I have talked for hours together, with still plenty of hours left on the battery charge. When the battery charge goes below a threshold, the phone gives a faint cooing bell which lets me know that it is time to stop and recharge - but believe me, I have encountered that need maybe only twice in the past year and a half, and I am a pretty heavy user of the phone when I am at home.

I am not going to delve into the features, since they have been covered in the 'An electronics fan' review well, as also in the 'Amazon product description'. They are all true to the fullest extent. Among the features listed, those that I found the most useful are:

*ear-phone compatible (I could just hang the handset on my belt and go ahead with my work while talking)

*Page handset

*Caller ID with menu (I had privacy manager turned on by my service provider, so I could screen the calls)

*Rocket dial (I could store my most-dialled number and call it with a single click of the button)

*Handset volume controls conveniently located

*Ringer volume/tone control

*10-name/number memory for personal contacts

*Previous caller ids are stored - I just have to scroll them to call them back

The other aspect that I liked is that I could operate the various controls with ease. Infact, I didn't even have to go through the manual for most of the features.

This phone is pretty good for the household. My friend bought it for around 40$. It sells around 31 in Amazon now. I think it is a good deal to buy it here. I would recommend it to my friends, and may be present it to someone as well.

I've had this phone for a year now and I love it. The reception is perfectly clear and I have wireless internet. There is never a problem with interference even when we go to the end of our 2 acre property. I love the ability to turn off the ringers for various callers on different handsets. I work nights and the kid calls would keep me up all summer, but I don't miss the call from work or my hubby. My only gripe is there is no speed dial capability on the handsets, only the base which is not of much use.

I just received this phone system as a replacement for my AT&T inside equipment plan. It is not what I expected. Last year I received the TRU9465 and it is excellent. The newer model has horrible static interference and has fewer features. I am sending it back and hopefully will be able to get another 9465 if available. The 9465 is of excellent quality, no interference and fantastic speaker phone and features. Do not get this phone if you have wireless devices in your home.

I bought this phone over a year ago and we still think its a great phone system. After reading all the reviews for both the uniden and panasonic, I went with the uniden. Like a number of reviews, I experienced some of the same problems but now know that it was the batteries that were failing to accept a charge. Two of the phones took 24-48 hours to fully charge and one never did. I ended up going to Walmart and buying a replacement battery which charged within 24 hours. After that, I get excellent reception anywhere in or outside my tri-level home and have not had any further problems with the batteries. I especially like the feature that allows you to assign a ring tone to assigned numbers in the phone's phonebook. I have the Star Spangled Banner assigned to family members. I highly recommend this phone system.

My handset is placed back on the charger every time I'm not on the phone and still it only has a 19 minute battery life for a call. This is the second battery that this phone has had and I don't plan on buying another one for it. Stay away at all costs!

After several problems with other brands of phones, I purchased this about a year ago from another source (I believe it was even a refurbished set), and it has worked great for me. I am only giving it 4 stars because after about six months the battery on one of the sets stopped holding a charge and needs to be replaced. I have recommended this set to my family and friends, and in the future when it comes times to replace my own I will most likely buy Uniden again.

We bought this system from Costco about 3 years ago - it came with 3 handsets and the base unit answering machine.

It is THE BEST system we have owned by far! We have experienced NONE of the problems that others have mentioned here. I don't know... maybe we're in the right location?

Our phones have never had a battery die on them - NEVER - and we use them ALOT! Perhaps because we are diligent about putting them back on their charger nightly?

We encountered a small issue which was a bit of interference on our kitchen handset - and that only occurred when we placed our wireless laptop near it!

The only issue I am finding now is that I would like to add an additional handset or two and they seem to be pretty expensive - considering what we paid for the entire system at Costco originally!

Overall though, I think it is a 5-star system - which is the rating I'm giving it!

The phone itself works rather well especially with the answering machine built in to the base. 5.8ghz also is the bomb diggity. The phone is inexpensive and does work great, but...

It works great, as long as you're within a close proximity to the base. If you're not you can move the handset and hear static. That means your phone signal is still an analogue signal over 5.8ghz. The next part is, if you get close to the fringe of the base, your audio to the base will cut out though you can still hear the other person. Then, the call just stops. It's like somebody hung up but the handset terminates the call.

Good for a small place, but for $20 don't get your hopes up. You get what you pay for. My recommendation is to just save up and buy a Panasonic Gigarange phone, never had a problem with my sets of those bad boys.

This phone is nothing spectacular. All in all, everything works as advertised. I have, however, a few reservations:

-The handset microphone is WAY too quiet. I always have people asking me to speak up. The phone is designed flat, so to move the mouthpiece closer to your mouth means moving the earpiece farther from your ear. Not a great solution, obviously.

-The volume control on the answering machine is set too high. The lowest volume is still too high, and the highest is ridiculously high (unless you're in a manufacturing environment).

-The ringer control on the phone is set too high. The low volume is still to loud and the high volume is way too loud.

-No speakerphone, which is no fun when you are on the phone with a customer service (cable/phone/credit card/etc.).

I generally like this phone, but have a few issues I will share:

PROS: It is very easy to reset the date and time and other settings on this phone, you can do so without opening the manual. Press the settings button and a voice guides you through the setup.

You get a belt clip and handsfree ear bud (which my wife cannot live without).

Full featured, gives you all the caller-ID, call waiting, etc that you expect in a modern phone.

Good range - it works nicely even outside the house (although whenever we get too close to our Linksys wireless router, we get interference - but that is true of any 5.8GHz phone system).

CONS: Something that annoys me will almost all cordless phones, when the power cuts out in the house, I have to reprogram the time and date. I would love to see a phone with a battery backup for the time and date!

A previous reviewer (Murphy) misunderstood what the difference between 5.8 and 2.4 is in these phones. He said "The range on this phone is SUPPOSED to be more than TWICE that of a 2.4Gz phone. "

If he would have called Uniden, Panasonic, Sony, etc, they would have told him that the range for a 5.8 phone is actually supposed to be LESS than 2.4 but A MUCH CLEARER CALL and MORE SECURE.

I tested this with 2 phones each from Panasonic, and Uniden (2.4 and 5.8) and compared them also to my old 900Mhz Sony and 900Mhz Uniden. The 2.4Mhz phones had the best distance and the 5.8Mhz had the best quality sound.

I've had this expensive system for one year and it is currently not functional. The audio cuts out randomly -- you can sometimes hear very faintly, but usually, not at all. I changed batteries, but the problem is now worse. The "help" offered by Uniden was to use only THEIR batteries. SO now I can spend another $30 on more batteries and that doesn't guaruntee that the problem will be solved. Not bloody likely! Crap product, crap service!

This is a really good phone that's taken a lot of drops and keeps on ticking. It's solidly constructed, well-engineered, and built much better than the GE/Motorola disposable phones. Plus, it looks a heck of a lot better than the other phones. I've had this since it first came out, and there's been no problems despite the accidental drops or what have you of daily heavy usage. The built-in speakerphone on each handset continues to be a stunning feature. Also, the battery life is ridiculously long, and this makes up for the lack of a battery meter. Think of this phone as a Toyota and the others as GM. Which would you trust if they made your life support systems? Enough said.

The only thing that could have been improved upon:
-Expandability of handsets limited (not really a problem for most).
-There is no instant synchronization of stored numbers from one phone to the other (something I miss about my old Sony phone).
-As mentioned before, the only warning of a low battery is an audible alert/led msg (while you are using it) that the battery is low. From that point on, you only have about a minute or so of talk time left.

Like anything in life, you get what you put into it. Read the manual. Learn what this phone allows you to do. Despite a previous poster's comments, this phone easily allows you to toggle on/off the 1- (by pressing *) and the area code (by pressing #) of your caller ID listings. It's in the manual, if the previous poster had actually bothered to read it before posting his mental spasms (a priceless moment).

There is a newer model out (TRU8885-2) that addresses the few shortcomings of this phone and adds some cool new ones like a smaller and better base station, albeit imo it does not look as nice.

my fiance and I have both had uniden 900 megahertz for almost a decade. When we met, we both had the same phone and continued to use them for five more years! I loved uniden, so I was really excited when this new cool looking phone came out. we waited for the price to drop somewhat and finally bought it. Well, I'm not so impressed. the main thing is that it cuts out or breaks up when i'm in my office. Every phone conversation I have to walk into the living room b/c it gets somewhat better reception out there. it's worse than my cell phone by far. i don't really use the fancy features. answering machine works well, it's very modern looking, but i'm upset every time I have to move around the house to get good reception. I think there have to be better phones out there, esp for the $$$$.

I have had this phone for over 5-10 years? I don't know how long, but it's been quite awhile. It is a very good, long lasting phone. The only problem I've had with it, is that (as it ages) it picks up a lot of static, and even other conversations of people from who knows where. But overall, this is a very nice phone. It's even been dropped in the sink, and still works~ : ) This is a good buy, if you can stand the static on occasion.

I have been using this product for several years and have been happy with it. I moved into a house and needed 2 extra handsets, which are working quite well. My only complaint is the limited memory for the address book. The range is more than adequate, and the voice quality is good.

I'm sure the handsets would've worked great except that our current phone/handsets only work with a maximum of 4 handsets which was not mentioned in the on line manual. Therefore, the two extra handsets that I ordered was useless. I could return the product except that it would cost me more to send out since the shipping was more than the two handsets and also the refund on the phone had a 15% restocking fee so it was worthless for me to ship it out. Make sure you research what your current phone can handle before ordering additional handsets. Best bet is to call the company and get a verbal answer rather than trying to read it on the on-line manual.

"Good phone. Great price." 2009-03-27

I have had this 3 phone sys. for about 2 weeks now. Price was $49.99. Very satisfied overall. Cons were no belt clip, no lighted keypad, no speaker phone on the base unit. Pros were speaker phone on hand sets, 70 name address book, no interference with my wireless internet connection due to the 5.8 GHz digital technology. It is nice to have phones in 3 locations through out my home where ther may not be a phone jack for a hard wireed phone. Reception is very good at longer distances than our old phone outside. It is also a good feature to be able to join a conversation with some one on the other hand sets. Battery life so far seems very good for extended times off the charging station. I wish I had bought a couple extra systems for gifts on birthdays or christmas. When I purchased this phone system at Buy.com I was able to select free shipping and avoid shipping charges. It took a little longer to get them but I was not in a big hurry.

Had this phone for about a month. Very good quality in and out. The answering/recording part of the phone isn't the best.....but it's ok. The sound on the recorder sounds a little harsh....probably the little speaker used.

Battery life is very good........call quality is excellent!

This model has been replaced with newer ones.....but I would buy this same model again.....it's just a good simple functional cordless phone.

I can ony compare to my other phones.....I've had 27mhz though 2.4mhz before....to this date.....my old 900mhz Uniden was the best out of them all......it just wasn't digital.....but had the best range and sound.

Range on this model is over 1000 feet......though walls and all.....if you can get it for around 30 bucks you wont disopointed.

I run a business out of my home so my phone and answering machine really need to work well. This phone is cheap and you get three handsets, wide reception range. However the answering machine audio is very poor quality, hard to understand what the message is about or who it is from. Caller ID and call waiting work fine. Sometimes when I am taking a call it sounds like I am in a tunnel. And a minor point is that on calling back long distance caller ID you can't just add a 1, you have to re-enter the entire number. So you might have to write it down first. It does the job but it's not top of the line.

We have a field across from our house and it would reach out there with no problem what so ever, and it is a good 200+ feet across the street!!! The quality is not bad in these phones. I have no problems with range of reception and the sound quality is not bad. They also don't interfere with internet usage like some phones can. BUT, why oh, why would you want two phones that cannot be used at the same time? It's just plain stupid. If you're on the phone and someone picks up the other handset you'll lose the call. You can't let kids talk to grandma together. You can't arrange plans with friends together. You can't even yell, "hey, pick up the phone, so-and-so wants to talk to you". You have to transfer the call to the other handset and you're out of the conversation. It's not the end of the world but it is annoying. Get a phone that has ALL of the good qualities instead.

Finally a phone that DOESN'T interfere with my wireless internet! It uses a combo of 5.8ghz and 900mhz, unlike some that use the 2.4ghz combo, which will knock out wireless internet.

Range is excellent. Went down in basement and outside all around house and didn't lose the connection.

1 drawback- yeah, you can only use one handset at a time. No biggie here.

You'd think that because these phones have a higher GHz, that the sound would be of decent quality...NOT! These phones have bad static and when I am on the phone, I am questioned about where I am! Ridiculous! The Uniden 2.4 GHz is a wonderufl phone compared to this one, never had any problems of the 3 years I had them, however after then, they just went dead on me, I had the expandable ones (2.4) and only one just stopped working. So I would go with the 2.4 before I went with the 5.8. Awful quality and sound!!! Do not waste your money!

"Do some research first before buying" 2004-03-20

I'm a newbie scanner and was looking for a good, all round scanner. I knew most of the bigger systems out there are using the "Trunk Tracking" technology, so decieded to buy a scanner that could track those systems (duh). After programming the freqs into the scanner banks (daunting at first but once you do the first couple it's pretty easy and quick) I was surprised by how 'quiet' certain airways were. After a little research I discovered that some of the larger agencies systems are actually DIGITAL, and this scanner can not listen into them. That was a little annoying. Uniden now have Digital scanners and Trunk Tracking III capability, so if your area is digital (check before you buy) then you might be better holding off for the newer generation scanner. Apart from that little snafu I am very happy with the product overall and have enjoyed several hours of listening to airport and other frequencies. Wish it could monitor FM and TV audio (I have a radio-reciever, yet can't listen to local radio broadcasts on it, seems a bit weird). There is a gap in coverage between 512 - 805 MHz for some reason, so I miss some airport tower chat. Not a huge deal. In summary, ignore some of the hype that it has Trunk Tracking II capabilities, if your area is digital, it makes no difference. I'll probably wait until the prices come down to a sensible level and get a digital & analog system. Happy Listening.

I received a rather generous gift certificate for Christmas this year and decided to get something I might not ordinarily buy. I chose this particular Uniden, Bearctcat, Scanner. As stated in another review, to the beginner, the "art of scanning", can seem a little overwhelming. Rest assured, any effort exerted in learning how to use this scanner will pay off with many hours of listening enjoyment. My Bearcat II has been rock solid thus far and is for all intents and purposes a quality, user- friendly product. The manual refers to "third party software" that allegedly allows you to program your scanner using your PC. This software is quite pricey though. I would recommend spending some time learning your new scanner and determine how much you care to invest in this hobby before spending another 40.00 to 70.00 on software. Some of my friends who initially scoffed at my scanner purchase were quite shocked by the amount of information available via the airwaves. Several have now purchased one. I live in a Major City and continue to be amazed by the well-choreographed "dance" between dispatcher and L.E.O. I worked for a very tight knit S.O. for well over a decade, and as a natural consequence, I understand the terminology. A novice will want to pull many of the codes from the Internet and either learn them or have them easily available for reference. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine!?

I purchased my BC245XLT with the idea of being able to take advantage of using Uniden's Smartscanner Technology and downloading my frequencies based on my area code. It seems that Uniden has dropped this feature as of February 2002 and according to one of their tech support people, have no intention of bringing this service back. So, if you can find the list of frequencies and then have the time to set each one, have at it. Personally, I would pick another manufacturer that advertises and stands behind their product's features.

If you really need trunktracking then go with this Uniden because even tough its a "cheap" scanner it is still superior... to his counterpart, in most aspects. BUT if you dont care about trunktracking systems, DONT buy this unit. All Uniden handhelds scanners are built cheap and you can feel its cheapness all around. The material is poor and the sound, oh the sound its not good at all. In a scale of 1 to 10, sound is 5. This unit is easy to use, has a computer interface and its scan and search speed is very good. Its sensitivity is above average. But again, if you dont need trunktracking look for professional models (that in fact are not that expensive ...

I ordered two. I don't get why this series of phones gets marginal reviews. We have the all of the phones in our home switched over to these Uniden 2.4mhz models because of reliability, sound quality and price. At this price, when the batteries die and the buttons start to stick in several years (which almost all eventually do), toss them out. We have bought plenty of bad phones in the past, but with this line we have had no static or premature phone death. The search feature button on the base is nice when it gets buried in the couch. I strongly recommend them. Only reason I didn't give it a 5/5 is it wasn't free...

"Great value, would buy again" 2008-09-06

I've had this phone system for almost two months and I am completely satisfied with it. I replaced it with another Uniden that was pretty old. Unidens are my favorite, I've tried other brands but most of them sound like you are talking in a wind tunnel. We don't have a phone line upstairs but I'm able to use the second phone that comes in the package that only requires a plug in, and voila a phone is upstairs. That saves me money.

I go outside with it and even in my garage and I have not had any static. I like the speakerphone ability on it, I think it's plenty loud enough. I also like the page feature so I can page my husband upstairs and tell him something rather than walking to the other end of the house and yelling from the bottom of the stairs. I would definetly buy this product again and I will tell my friends about it too. Thanks!

We've had this system, expanded to 10 handsets, for 6 months. When our old phones and baby monitor died I wanted to buy a new set that could double as an intercom system and baby monitor, both of which are features advertised with this system. I found to my regret that this is a decent expandable system, but does not live up to its promise regarding advanced features.

PROS:

- Expands to 10 handsets fine. The extra regular handsets interchange with the original chargers fine. Only the 2 waterproof handsets have to use their different base.

- Voice mail indicator light on the top of each handset works with the phone company's indicator tone (i.e. stutter dial tone).

- Dedicated voice mail button can be programmed to dial your retrieval phone number & code for one touch message retrieval.

- Each handset has a number (based on the order in which you register them with the base) and a nickname. When you turn on room monitoring or intercom, it gives you the list in numeric order to scroll through, but also shows you the nicknames ("Kitchen", "Johns Room", etc.).

- Redial has the last 3 numbers dialed, not just the last 1.

- Good backlighting shows up in the dark.

CONS:

- None of the bases are wall mountable.

- Each handset must be configured individually. The phone book can be entered on one then told to copy to each of the others (one at a time). All other features including speed dial settings, voice mail key, ring tones, etc. have to be set on each handset.

- Ring tone choices are poor, and grating. There are no remotely "normal" ring tones that are not either gratingly high pitched and metallic, or too soft to be heard. We resorted to the musical tunes but the handsets don't ring at the same time, so it's still a cacaphony.

- The intercom feature has it's own painful ringtone that can't be changed.

- The "intercom" is more accurately termed "in house calling". The receiving handset rings, and a person must pick it up and answer it. There's no way to make it automatically go to speakerphone. So if the kids choose not to answer the phone, you can't just tell them to come downstairs to dinner anyway. So much for our plan to quit shouting up the stairs! There is one brand that works the "correct" way. Unfortunately, I forgot which it was, since I ran out of time and motivation to package up 10 Unidens and send them back in order to by the other system.

- Speakerphone won't turn on until after a few rings when calling out. You can't turn on speakerphone then dial. Our old AT&T 2 handset system allowed us to hit the speaker button to get a dialtone, then dial the #.

- Speakerphone volume max is low; it's borderline if you're using the room monitoring feature for listening to a sleeping baby.

- When room monitoring is on you cannot make or receive calls. When there is an incoming call you'll get one odd tone, then you have to quickly turn of monitoring and then answer the call.

- Handsets cannot be used as monitoring receivers (the listening end) while on the base. So they have to be well charged ahead of time, and may not make it through the night.

Recommendation: All of the manufacturers have their user manuals online. Before buying a system, download the manual and read through the details of how the features work. If I had done that, I would not have purchased this phone.

Great looking phone. Sound is borderline, not bad, but not good either. Cordless range is great. Missing nice features like "Mute" button. Broke within two weeks. I sent it back and decided to break down and buy the Panasonic KX-TG6021M 5.8 GHz Cordless Telephone instead. Should have just bought this one to begin with, however, I really did not want another silver phone as I already have 3 of the silver Panasonic Cordless phones for my home line. I wanted something to distinguish to two lines.

The KX-TG602 has much better sound quality including the speaker phone, same range, and includes the missing "mute" button. The big difference is it a Panasonic. Panasonic phones just work! I have tried everything, Uniden, Vtech, GE and Panasonic, but I keep going back to Panasonic when it comes to wireless phones.

I know every company has it's lemons, I just seem to get them with every other brand except Panasonic.

I bought this phone specifically to mount on the kitchen wall.. This product is not wall mountable. The Silver version of it, however, is. Go figure.

Anyhow -- the phone is excellent. Good range, and great voice quality. Nice pleasant ring tones, Amber backscreen, long battery life.. And overall good feel.

The Uniden chipset provides a solid 5.8 phone, for a steal of a price here. I would recommend going with at least dual handsets for this price, and 3 if you need them.

Bottom line, if you don't care about wall mounting this version (the black) -- It is great.

Don't let the wording fool you guys like it did me. :)

Amazon, however, did handle this incorrect information very well on my end. Though , whoever is responsible for the information page, needs to remove the 'wall mountable' portion.

The distance is good, the clarity and fullness of the earpiece is superb, the speakerphone is great and loud and the intercom feature is first class if you have many handsets (but the ringer on the initiating handset for an intercom call is quite annoying). Adding handsets is a breeze. Nothing better will come along until DECT hits the scene in the US in a big way...

My biggest complaint is that volume level is terrible. At maximum volume I have trouble hearing the person I'm speaking to....and I have good hearing! I don't recommend this product at all.

I got this extra base and phone with the purchase of the Uniden 5.8 GHz w/ a digital answering machine and caller ID. The battery life on this model is a joke. You leave it off the base for a couple days and it's dead, even if you haven't used it. I've owned Uniden in the past and had a great experience. That phone wasn't constanly dying on me. And don't get me started on the static you get with this handset when you go into another room. Spend the extra money and get a better model! Oh, and say you're on the phone and your headset is about to die, you can't just pick up a different one and use that one. You'll have to re-call the person you were talking to. It's doesn't allow 2 phones to be on at once. And considering the battery life is terrible, this is a feature that is a must.

We have NEVER owned a worse phone. Static, 20-30' range (if lucky), poor battery life and aweful technical support. I didn't expect much given the price, but this phone is terrible! When I called Uniden regarding the poor reception, they simply blamed it on our environment and the location in the house. Funny, we have used a Motorola 900MHz phone and Plantronics wireless headset (I beleive it using a frequency within the 400Mhz range) and we have never had any problems. We will not purchase any Uniden product again.

"Easily among the best in its class" 2009-06-27

I've been using the 3-phone set which is this exact set plus one extra phone for about six months already. I hope that my experience with product may help others decide whether this is the set worth buying or they should be looking elsewhere. So far, the phones operated as expected and they gave me no trouble. We have a total of six phones in the house but, I suspect that these three are the ones we're using close to 100% of the time now.

The set is expandable to 6 handsets per base (that would be the answering machine) but each handset could, in fact, be registered to up to 4 different bases which would make everything extremely complicated if it was actually done.

I ended up with the Uniden DECT set after a sad experience with 'brand X' or, shall we call it 'brand V'? :) Their (more expensive) offering was so bad, I had no choice but to return it so, I'm using the Uniden now and I am happy with it.

For efficiency sake, I will start with the negatives so that anyone who cares about these (lack of) features can quickly decide that this set is not for you. Here they are, the negatives:

- The speaker volume is low. This is true for both the phones and the answering machine/base. This probably has some advantages when it comes to battery life (see below) but anyone who must have a loud speaker should be warned that these phones' speakers are anything BUT loud.

- The ring volume is also low. Seriously, anyone who has a hearing problem should NOT buy this set. I do not mind the low ring volume because too loud rings bother me but I am listing this as a negative because some could mind.

- The intercom can NOT use the speaker. It's the earpiece only for the intercom.

- Only the numeric keypad lights up when the phone rings. Some of the essential buttons: the on, off, phonebook, caller ID are not lit and that makes using the phone in the dark somewhat difficult.

The features that made me decide that this is the set for me include:

+ Long battery life. Possibly because of the low-volume, these phones seem to last forever on a charge. The manufacturer claims up to 10 hours of talk time. I'm not sure if that's the case but, so far, rarely see the 'low battery' warning yet and I am spending many hours, almost every day, on conference calls.

+ Good reception. With the base in the basement, I was able to use the phone, outside, in the backyard and in the driveway which I cannot do with my great Motorola 5.8 MHz sets.

+ Great design. These phones and the base are actually pretty in an unobtrusive, minimalistic way. They are a little on the small and light side but they can hold their own in a room full of gadgets.

+ Easy access to voice mail from the handsets. The handset keys actually have the remote-like symbols for play/stop/fast-forward, etc. so, if anyone does not feel like reading the menu options from the phone's display, you can simply use it as if you were using a remote. Very nice.

+ Belt clip - my wife loves this more than I do because I tend to be at my desk when I talk on the phone.

+ Headset jacks on all handsets - another feature that my wife loves.

+ 50 page, VERY thorough manual that was written by an English-speaker. This may sound like a trivial thing but I was actually impressed by how easy to use and how comprehensive the manual was. Every feature appears to be covered.

+ Easy to navigate, simple menus

+ Privacy mode - once on a call, you can block all other registered sets to listen on your conversation.

Other features, which I expect in any phone in this class and are well implemented include:

= 3-way calling

= 70 phonebook entries per set with the ability to copy individual entries or the entire phonebook from one set to another (I tried it and it was very easy)

= The ability to personalize each phonebook entry to show name (can keep the caller ID name if you don't want to complicate your life), wallpaper, ring style and display style (can't see myself doing that a lot)

= 30 caller ID number per set, in addition to the phonebook entries

= 5 'last dialed' numbers availalble to redial

= 10 ring tones (in fact 5 rings and 5 melodic tones)

= 10 display styles

= 5 wallpaper styles

= English/Spanish menus

= Independent volume controls for headset, speaker and ringer.

= The ability to set the time/date on all sets and base from one handset.

= The ability to control the answering machine, including turning it off from any handset.

= Intercom.

= Paging a lost handset from the base.

I am overall VERY happy with these phones but I must take off one star, mostly for the 'dark' buttons and the 'low volume' issue. Other than that, they come as close to 'perfect' as anything. This is, by far, the best multiple phones set I've had... ever.

Just in case anyone cares to know what DECT is about.

DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications) is a relatively new (2005) standard for cordless phones, initially developed in Europe.

Some of the advantages of DECT 6.0 include:

- easier to implement multiple handsets sharing one phone jack connection via one common base (have it on a 5.8 GHz set as well)

- easier to implement intercom features between individual handsets (have it on a 5.8 GHz set as well)

- extended range, up to 300 feet

- low power consumption and, therefore, extended battery life

- better performance in areas experiencing heavy radio traffic

- not affected by Wi-Fi or Bluetooh signals (neither are the 5.8 MHz)
